Spotlight on Moline: ASSC

Moline is home to the world’s longest-running After School Satan Club. It began operations in January of 2022 and is currently in its fifth year, renting space at a local elementary school. The club was originally designed for elementary school children, but as those students began bringing their younger and older siblings, club leaders adapted and now offer age-appropriate activities to attendees who range in age from pre-Kindergarten to high school.

Another addition the club has made over the years is the introduction of outside presenters who share their areas of expertise with the children through interactive lessons. Presenters are usually from the arts or science fields, while a few of them are trades persons who talk about their line of work and walk the children though a sampling of their job experience. Presentations usually run for half of the 60-minute meeting time, with the rest of the session dedicated to art projects and science experiments. Club spokesman William Prince said that, consistent with the club’s philosophy of encouraging exploration, independence, and confidence, children pick their own project out of around 20 choices.

Yet another evolution has been adding a summer edition, which launched in 2025. With school out of session, these meetings are held at a local business or non-profit. Activities have included sculpting pottery, joining an astronomy club for stargazing, and visiting nursing home residents on Game Night. The club also aims to do one community service per year.

Prince reports that the club has grown steadily over the years, as it became more ingrained in the community. Initially consisting of three students, it has blossomed to 22 members this year. Prince added that one of the endearing qualities that has developed is seeing the older students acting as mentors to the younger ones. He said the plans are to keep the club going as long as there is interest.
